What problems can a cancelled flight cause?

Disrupted travel plans:

A sudden cancellation can cause significant delays, affecting bookings and later commitments.

Missed connections:

You may miss other flights, trains, or transport, leading to inconvenience and extra costs.

Accommodation issues:

You may need alternative lodging if the cancellation affects overnight plans.

Stress and uncertainty:

Confusion and a lack of clear information can create emotional and physical strain.

Loss of time and money:

You may face unexpected expenses for meals, alternative transport, or unplanned accommodation.

When am I entitled to compensation for a cancelled flight?

You don’t have to accept a flight cancellation without action. Under European passenger rights rules, in certain cases you are entitled to a refund and airport assistance. In addition, if the airline did not inform you at least 14 days before departure, you may be entitled to compensation ranging from €250 to €600.

Where and when you are protected in Europe

EC Regulation 261, which defines your rights in case of a cancelled flight, applies within the EU airspace, as well as in Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and the so-called outermost regions (such as Guadeloupe, the Canary Islands, the Azores, and others).

Coverage depends on the route and the airline.

Coverage by itinerary and airline

EU airline:

Covered for flights within the EU, departing the EU to a non-EU country, and arriving in the EU from a non-EU country.
Not covered for flights entirely outside the EU.

Non-EU airline:

Covered for flights within the EU and departing the EU to a non-EU country.
Not covered for flights arriving in the EU from a non-EU country, nor for flights entirely outside the EU.

Cancellation notice and entitlement to compensation

Your right to compensation also depends on when you were informed and on the alternative flight offered.

Less than 7 days’ notice:

Compensation is due if the alternative flight departs more than 1 hour earlier or arrives more than 2 hours later.

7 to 13 days’ notice:

Compensation is due if the alternative flight departs more than 2 hours earlier or arrives more than 4 hours later.

Less than 14 days’ notice with no rerouting offered:

You are entitled to both a refund and compensation.

When does compensation not apply?

You are not entitled to compensation if:

  • You were informed at least 14 days in advance.
  • You were offered an alternative flight that meets the time limits described above.
  • The cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline’s control (e.g., extreme weather, air traffic control strikes, medical emergencies, security risks). Technical issues or the airline’s operational reasons are not considered extraordinary circumstances.

How much compensation can I receive for a cancelled flight?

The amount is fixed and depends only on the flight distance.

€250:

for flights up to
1,500 km.

€400:

for flights between
1,500 km and 3,500 km.

€600:

for flights over
3,500 km.

What is rerouting and how does it work?

Rerouting means being offered an alternative flight to reach your destination. If you accept it and arrive with a limited delay, your compensation can be reduced by 50%.

Routes under 1,500 km:

reduced to €125
if you arrive less than 2 hours late.

Routes 1,500–3,500 km:

reduced to €200
if you arrive less than 3 hours late.

Routes over 3,500 km:

reduced to €300
if you arrive less than 4 hours late.

  • Please note: your right to ground assistance (meals, hotel) is separate and still applies, regardless of compensation.

Your rights in case of a cancelled flight

European rules guarantee you the following:

Right to information:

The airline must inform you about your rights.

Right to assistance:

You are entitled to meals, drinks, phone calls and, if necessary, hotel and transport during the wait.

Right to a refund or rerouting:

You can choose between a full ticket refund or an alternative flight to your destination.

Right to compensation:

Financial compensation (from €250 to €600) for the inconvenience if you were not informed in time.

Difference between compensation and refund

You may be entitled to both.

Refund

Means getting the ticket price back if you decide not to travel, for example after a major disruption. It covers what you paid for the fare (and related unused services, when applicable), and it is separate from any cash compensation.

Compensation

Is a fixed sum of money owed for the inconvenience caused by an unannounced cancellation or other qualifying disruption. It is not based on the ticket price: the amount depends on factors like flight distance and the rules that apply to your case.

Common mistakes to avoid

Don’t accept a voucher thinking it’s compensation: they are not the same thing.

Don’t confuse ground assistance (meals, hotel) with cash compensation.

Always keep proof: boarding passes, emails, photos of airport boards, receipts.

What if the airline doesn’t provide assistance?

  • Keep all receipts: document every expense you had to cover.
  • Request reimbursement from the airline: contact the airline and ask for these costs back, attaching receipts.
  • File an official complaint: if the airline refuses, you can contact the competent national authority to enforce your rights.
