A flight strike can cause major disruption and derail your travel plans. With SkyPay, you may be able to claim the compensation you deserve if your flight was affected by a strike. You could be entitled to up to €600 per passenger, regardless of the ticket price.

When am I entitled to compensation for a flight strike?

You may be entitled to compensation when the strike is organized by the airline’s own staff (pilots, cabin crew, and similar roles). A strike by external staff, such as air traffic control, is considered an extraordinary circumstance and generally does not qualify for compensation.

In addition, your flight must fall within the scope of EU rules, meaning:

  • All flights departing from an EU (or UK) airport, operated by any airline.
  • All flights arriving in the EU (or UK) when operated by a European airline.

How much compensation can I receive?

The compensation amount depends on the flight distance, not on the ticket price.

€250:

for flights up to
1,500 km.

€400:

for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km,
and for other flights between
1,500 km and 3,500 km.

€600:

for all other flights over
3,500 km.

Knowing your rights helps you travel better

When an airline staff strike causes a delay or a cancellation, EU Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004 protects you.

If your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to:

  • Information: the airline must inform you about the cancellation and your rights.
  • Choice between a refund or rerouting: you can choose a full ticket refund or an alternative flight to your destination.
  • Assistance: during the wait, you are entitled to meals, drinks, two phone calls or emails, and, if necessary, hotel accommodation and transport.
  • Financial compensation: a payment between €250 and €600 if the cancellation was not communicated with sufficient notice.

If your flight is delayed, you are entitled to:

  • Assistance: meals, drinks, and communication options for delays over 2, 3, or 4 hours depending on the flight distance.
  • Refund: if the delay exceeds 5 hours, you can decide not to travel and request a ticket refund.
  • Financial compensation: if you arrive at destination with a delay of 3 hours or more, you may be entitled to compensation unless the cause is considered an extraordinary circumstance.

Refund vs compensation: they are not the same

You may be entitled to both.

Refund

It's the return of the ticket price if you decide not to travel.

Compensation

It's the sum of money owed for the inconvenience you suffered.

Requesting a refund does not automatically exclude your right to compensation.

What if the airline does not provide assistance?

If the airline doesn’t offer meals, drinks, or accommodation as required:

  • Document everything: keep evidence of the lack of assistance (photos, emails, staff names).
  • Ask for help on the spot: speak with airline staff at the airport and remind them of your rights.
  • Pay necessary costs and keep receipts: if you must pay out of pocket for food or accommodation, keep expenses reasonable and save all receipts.
  • File an official complaint: if the airline refuses to reimburse your expenses, contact the competent national authority to enforce your rights.

Remember:
you have the right to immediate assistance. Being informed and acting proactively is the key to making sure your rights are respected.
